About

|THE SWITCH is thrilled to present its 1st Online Exclusive Show, “No Hope for us Dreamers?” by SKOYA.

Celebrating a history in the process, the exhibition documents, preserves and presents SKOYA "No Hope for us Dreamers?" series - a body of work of over 63 paintings developed throughout the early stage of the Alchemist's career, with only a few pieces remaining available.

Produced from 2009 to 2013, each of these paintings have an intricate relationship with SKOYA's alchemical development, all filled with numerous and hidden iconic keys to unveil.

"The bright colours applied on the paintings’ big formats strike apart from the gallery's monotonous white walls. This immediately conveys a message: SKOYA’s body of works always hold an intricate relation with its surroundings, here being the urban environnement of the french capital, relentlessly growing.

At a time where our natural habitats are being citified, the artist drew in each of the paintings, a human silhouette. They represent the Dreamers and question the fragile position of such a role in contemporary societies, western ones especially.

For most, the silhouettes remain untouched, with intentionally exposed canvas, reflecting a freedom from immorality and sign of innocence. The thick and sparkled mate black paint outlining the garments, seem to act as a shield for the Dreamers — somewhat impenetrable, incorruptible.

The Artist made it easy for the viewers to grasp the significance of the paintings’ backgrounds, clearly acting as an opposite, a duality, with the silhouettes.

“It was a necessity to facilitate the viewer’s access into each work and comprehend their main codes"
— Skoya mentioned during our interview prior to the show’s opening.

Therefore, the background layer often suggests a mirror of our civilisation’s drifts, our breed’s conduct and the human nature at its finest. Subsequently, it implicates the daily choices taken as a species, the impact caused on a short and long term basis, as well as our political positions, their inequalities, gains and misconducts, with sole objective to influence, corrupt or condition the Dreamer. Such opposites seemingly create an overall well balanced composition throughout the works of Skoya Assemat-Tessandier’s 'No Hope for us Dreamers?' series.

By reviewing in details the backgrounds layers, the perfect arrangements is somewhat astonishing, if not obsessional. (You’ll only need to have a closer look at the multitude of coloured dots meticulously applied side by side, or sometimes layered on top of one another). This careful approach encircling the human silhouettes, (men and women, mostly women in the exhibited pieces for the show), seems guided by two strong feelings: either love and/or hope, for example when tiny dots encircle the women’s mind; or by hatred and/or disgust, when exposing industrialisation's mayhem.

We can summarise the question implied through the 'No Hope for us Dreamers?’ exhibition with the Alchemist’s position, as he likes to define himself, puzzled in between his hope, often symbolised by beauty and the harmonious millimetric details, and his disappointment by society’s conformism, its banality and bitterness — forever questioning the legitimacy of our corrupted systems and conditioned societies.

We feel this tension between the hideous and the beautiful, yet all in all a clear fascination towards extracting the essence of each things and pull out the essential. From the tremendous to the pathetic, the harmonious to the chaotic and the evident truth to uncertainty; as if the world was immersed in a pitched dark longing night, helplessly witnessing it, deep in our sleep, without any escape other than… to dream, sometimes with such intensity that it awakens us to realise we were in another reality. SKOYA makes us question this physical existence we desire, suffer, or have for ourselves. Sometimes neutral, sometimes opinionated, the Artist points out each other’s position and role within the human development.

Beyond the conveyed messages, SKOYA’s techniques and skills are very pleasant to see, especially the paintings’ backgrounds.”

— Pierre-Yves Ollivier, translated by M.A.T.
